As the financial crisis hits a new low, our high streets and shops will once again be suffering as a consequence
The ‘All seeing eye’ is a symbol which has featured throughout history in many different cultures and societies.
It has often been used in North America and Russia symbolically on money or seals associated with power. It
represents the omnipresence of God, watching the actions of humanity and serves as a reminder ‘we are being
watched’.
As the shop looks back at us; flipping the usual Gaze of consumers viewing products, we become the product of
our society, raising questions about our relationship with money, where we spend it and what we buy.
Howes hopes her work will remind the audience that they have power as consumers; where we spend our money, and on what, drives commerce and higher commercial powers.
In the context of the jewellery quarter, she hopes the work will also raise questions about what value we should put on skilled tradesmanship.
The eyes will eventually populate the Cafe and Gallery at Stryx, Jewellery Quarter and even become a cocoa duster template for your favourite cappucino...
All Seeing Eye runs 1/3/24 - 31/5/24.
