Gimpwork is one of the most easily recognisable forms of hairwork, consisting of wire worked loops of hair formed into flowers, wreaths and horseshoes. Most readily associated with the Victorian cult of mourning, this technique was also a means of family portraiture in a time before photography when commissioning a likeness was prohibitively expensive. This workshop goes through the basics of gimping, from making the woven lengths to turning them into a brooch to take home, and discusses the uses of hair in craft and the superstitions around it. All materials provided.
This workshop is designed for adults aged 50+ however adults of any age are welcome. There are 12 places available. These are free but booking is essential.
