Open Call for Residency at Stryx, Birmingham

Stryx’s residency programme SCAFFOLDING, awards artists in The Midlands the opportunity to work for 3 months in the culturally thriving heart of Birmingham.

The residency grants artists with uninterrupted time and space to develop projects, as well as having the opportunity to expand into a wider artistic community across the West Midlands.

SCAFFOLDING residency is intended for artists who would benefit from thinking, research based residency, who want to develop ideas around pension and money saving / earning from perspective a freelance based career. Production of finalised art work is not necessary. Artists will be expected to take part in two exhibitions showcasing work in progress, experimental projects or ideas.
Selected artists will be based at Stryx for 3 months working towards a group exhibition in February and March 2020.

There will be scheduled events showcasing the work / ideas of chosen artists, including two Digbeth First Friday
There is no commitment to produce a final piece of work, but the artists will have to be able to display the progression of their work / research / ideas in any form during the open to public events.

· Participation in 2 group shows

Residency Requirements:
Selected artists have to commit to working at least:
35h at Stryx.
The artists will be required to prepare a talk to be presented during the residency.
The artists will have to exchange one artwork with a fellow resident.
The artist will be commissioned to produce an artwork for Strytx's collection.

There will be a grant available to artists involved to cover all the above*

Application Process
Artists will be selected on the strength of their individual proposal, their portfolio, and must show a clear interest in pension / saving money topic.
They should have a clearly defined project in mind that would like to work on.
Proposals for projects can be at any stage, from new work to projects that are soon to be realised and should display or suggest possible interdisciplinary opportunities.

Deadline for submission is 31st August 2019. Successful applicants will be notified by 5th September 2019.

Project Proposal max. 500 words please outline experimental / utopian / brave / unrealistic idea on future pensions for freelance artists and other occupations in similar situation.
