The Mothership Method (The Creative Care Method)
The Mothership Method is Stryx's pioneering approach to integrating artist studios, exhibitions, Ofsted registered early years education, creative workspaces and family support within one cultural organisation.
Reimagining what a cultural organisation can be.
For generations, cultural organisations have asked families to fit around culture.
We believe it's time to design culture around families.
At Stryx, we are building a new Method for cultural participation - one that recognises care not as a barrier to creativity, but as the foundation from which creativity grows.
The Mothership Method brings together artists, families, early years education, creative workspaces and community under one roof, creating an environment where making, learning and caring happen side by side.
Our partnership with Patter Place marks an important step in this vision.
Together, we are establishing an Ofsted-registered early years setting embedded within a working artist-led organisation. Rather than separating childcare from cultural life, we are integrating it into the everyday rhythm of a creative community.
Children are not simply visitors to culture - they become part of it.
Creative practitioners and other parents who believe their children benefit from access to culture are not expected to choose between creative practice / work and family life - they are supported to sustain both.
Parents are not excluded from creative spaces - they belong within them.
This is not only childcare inside a gallery.
It is a reimagining of cultural infrastructure.
Inspired by Reggio Emilia and Montessori approaches, Patter Place provides high-quality, child-led early years education within the creative ecosystem of Stryx. Children grow up surrounded by artists' studios, exhibitions, conversations, making and experimentation - where creativity is experienced as part of everyday life rather than an occasional activity.
The benefits extend beyond early years education.
The Mothership Method strengthens opportunities for artists with caring responsibilities, supports freelance workers and self-employed parents, increases access to culture for young families, and demonstrates how artist-led organisations can become more inclusive, resilient and socially relevant. Leading the way to wider social change and sustainable and inclusive society.
As the cultural sector looks towards more equitable and sustainable futures, we believe care must become part of our creative infrastructure.
It is a prototype for the future of cultural organisations.
A future where care and creativity are no longer seen as competing priorities, but as essential partners in building healthier communities, stronger cultural ecosystems and more inclusive cities.
Because the future of culture begins with the people we choose to make space for.
